Cancer App Story Vanessa

My Name is Vanessa

I was diagnosed with Stage 2b breast cancer in December 2019 at 40 years old. Hearing “It’s Breast Cancer” left me in shock; I couldn’t process what the surgeon and nurse were saying.

I sat in my car, overwhelmed with despair, thinking about my family and fearing more bad news after my sister Veronica’s lung cancer diagnosis just two months prior. We had lost our mother to cancer a few years earlier, and as one of 13 siblings, the news felt devastating.

You don’t have time to think, everything happens so fast…Chemo, Surgery, Radiation endless needles and appointments. You wake up one day and you don’t recognize the person looking back at you in the mirror.

During treatment, I wished for an app to connect with peers my age who understood my journey. I struggled to share my feelings with family, not wanting to upset them. After treatment, the trauma hit hard, and I found myself overwhelmed by anxiety from endless Googling.

The Someone Like Me app would be invaluable for cancer patients, survivors and peers living with cancer guiding them to reliable and trustworthy resources.

It offers a safe space to share your cancer journey. Connect with peers, and arrange local meetups. You can listen to podcasts related to your cancer type and find local wellness activities near you, such as physiotherapy, yoga, diet & nutrition, mediatition and wig specialist etc…

This app is FREE for all cancer patients and survivors.

There will also be a separate login for spouces, family and friends to connect, support and have access to helpful information on how to help loved ones with cancer.

Thank you for reading my story.
